BackSpiti in winter is not just a destination; it’s an emotion. When snow embraces the remote valleys of Himachal Pradesh, Spiti transforms into a mystical white desert — India’s first Cold Desert Biosphere Reserve. This 8-day winter expedition takes you along the legendary Hindustan–Tibet Highway, following the Sutlej River through Kinnaur, the frozen Nako Lake, the 1,000-year-old Tabo Monastery, Dhankar, Kaza, Key Monastery, the World’s Highest Post Office in Hikkim, Komic, the iconic Langza Buddha statue, Asia’s highest suspension bridge at Chicham, the 500-year-old Giu Mummy, and scenic Sangla. Stay in warm traditional Himalayan homestays, experience authentic Spitian village life, crystal-clear star-filled skies, and raw mountain adventure.
Weather
Extreme winter cold in Spiti with temperatures dropping between 0°C to -15°C during daytime and -20°C to -25°C at night in Kaza. Cold winds and sub-zero conditions require high-grade multi-layer winter wear.
Road Conditions
Hindustan-Tibet Highway is paved till Rampur; high-altitude sections beyond Karcham, Malling Nallah, and into Kaza feature gravel, snow, and black ice. Travel is guided by experienced mountain drivers.
Altitude
Elevation ascends from Shimla (2,200 m) to Kalpa (2,960 m), Nako (3,662 m), Kaza (3,800 m), and Komic (4,587 m). Gradual ascent and hydration are vital for smooth acclimatization.
Network
BSNL postpaid and Jio 4G work reliably in Kaza and major villages. Airtel, Vi, and Vodafone lose signal beyond Reckong Peo.
Local Costs
ATMs in Kaza and Spiti are frequently non-operational in winter. Carry ₹4,000 to ₹6,000 cash for personal cafe meals, postcards, and souvenirs.
